Canberra and the ACT offer a range of activities and attractions to ensure an educational and enjoyable adventure for the entire family.

While many Australians consider Canberra to be a "pretty place with nothing to do", there are actually a surprising number of activities, hikes, museums and sites to entertain and educate the entire family.

Hiking and bushwalking enthusiasts are spoiled for choice in the ACT. One of my favourite hiking areas is the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve, a 40-minute drive from the Canberra city centre. Rich in indigenous and natural heritage, and home to many unique plants and animals, Tidbinbilla offers various walking trails, bicycle riding along the sealed roads and fire trails, and scenic drives with panoramic views of the Tidbinbilla Valley. While there, check out the radio telescopes and space-related gear at the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex, part of NASA's Deep Space Network.

Another great hike is to the top of Mount Taylor (near Woden Valley). More like a really big "hill" versus a true mountain, Mount Taylor is part of the Canberra Nature Park, and stands 856 metres above sea level. There are walking tracks to the peak, and it is suitable for nearly all skill levels. Over 85 species of birds have been identified in the area, and you're bound to see some roos as well.

Lake Burley Griffin is a magnificent setting for most outdoor activities. Whether you bike, blade, walk or jog around it, you'll surely experience some spectacular settings, pure tranquility, and heaps of animal life. Another popular way to explore the lake is by canoe, kayak or (for some real exercise) by paddleboat.

For golfers, Gold Creek Golf Course is a great track. Host of the 1996 PGA Seniors Championship, the 18-hole championship course offers pay-for-play and membership options, and is part of a multi-million-dollar leisure facility which includes health club, pool, children's recreation centre, café and restaurant.

While dad is playing golf at Gold Creek, why not take the kids to the nearby Cockington Green Gardens – a delightful display of meticulously-crafted miniature buildings, set within beautifully landscaped gardens. One of Canberra’s landmark attractions, it's won many tourism awards, and is fun for the entire family.

Kids (and "kids at heart") will find plenty of excitement at Questacon, an interactive science exhibit featuring hands-on activities, movies, shows, exciting science-type exhibits, a full-motion rollercoaster simulator and more. (Tip: Museum Victoria members get one free entry to Questacon!)

Black Mountain Tower offers amazing 360-degree views of Canberra and the surrounding area. It's well worth the trip up the mountain to gaze at the scenery, explore the historic gallery/exhibit, or have a meal in the revolving Alto Restaurant.

Packed with memorabilia, personal stories, displays, sculptures and exhibits, the Australian War Memorial offers a unique glimpse into the lives of the soldiers (and families) that endure the conflict of war.

The National Gallery highlights the talent of Australian and international artists, and features something for everyone, including Sidney Nolan's Ned Kelly collection, Indian and South East Asian pieces, a sculpture garden and various children's exhibits.

Garden and flower enthusiasts will be in horticulture heaven at the Australian National Botanic Gardens, featuring native plants from all parts of Australia, unique rock gardens, eucalyptus lawns and a magnificent rainforest.

Explore Australian history and culture through exhibits, technology and hands-on activities at the National Museum. Wander through the facility's extensive exhibition galleries, restaurants and theatres.

Last, but not least, Parliament House is one of the ACT's most popular attractions, offering free guided tours every half hour. Featuring impressive architecture, a stunning art collection and a beautiful landscape of green lawns and white pillars, it's sure to please everyone.
